5 UNBREAKABLE RULES OF SEVERANCE NEGOTIATION

1. BE 100% PROFESSIONAL
Treat this as the most important business deal of your career. Don’t make the customer (your employer) upset during the negotiation. Nobody does business with people who are mean or rude.

2. THIS IS BUSINESS, NOT PERSONAL
This is the hardest rule to handle. You feel harmed, damaged, upset, mad and the list goes on. Act on those emotions and you diminish your power.

3. THIS IS A NEGOTIATION
This means terms can change and be negotiated. It is not “take it or leave it.” Most companies are surprised when you start negotiating, they do not expect it.

4. DO NOT MENTION LAWYERS OR LAWSUITS
These scare companies. Mentioning these two topics is the surest way to get a company to become hostile. If you have to go down this road, there is plenty of time for this without scaring them.

5. YOU HAVE MORE POWER THAN YOU THINK
